With the switch to USB-C for its new iPhones, Apple has taken a significant step towards standardization. Rumors now suggest that the Magic Mouse, Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad could soon also support USB-C.

The most important facts in brief

  • Apple has already converted iPhones and iPads to USB-C, which suggests a possible expansion.
  • New indications from Apple accessory manufacturers point to revised versions of the input devices.
  • USB-C would offer a faster charging time and better compatibility with modern devices.
  • There have been no official announcements so far, but the indications are plausible.

The signs point to USB-C

With the introduction of USB-C on the iPhone 15 (781.00 euros), Apple has sent a clear signal: The long-serving Lightning connector could soon disappear from the entire product portfolio. The move to switch peripherals such as the Magic Mouse and Magic Keyboard to USB-C therefore seems only logical.

A recent report from macrumors.com suggests that Apple is planning to do just that. The Apple experts claim to have found corresponding indications for the imminent release of a new version of Apple Magic Mouse (69.00 euros), Magic Keyboard (from approx. 88 euros) and Magic Trackpad (111.90 euros) in the iOS 18.1 RC code.

Advantages of switching to USB-C

Even though macrumors was unable to find any concrete information about the features of Apple’s new peripherals in the code, there are already initial speculations. Among other things, it is assumed that the new devices will have a USB-C port. Switching to USB-C has several advantages. On the one hand, this could significantly reduce the charging time of the devices, as USB-C generally supports higher charging capacities than the Lightning port.

It would also make it easier to use input devices across platforms, as more and more devices from other manufacturers are also using USB-C. This would represent a noticeable improvement not only for users of Apple products, but also for potential new customers who use different devices.

Presentation in October?

A switch from Apple’s input devices to USB-C not only seems likely, but also makes sense. The indications from macrumors and Apple’s strategy to date strongly suggest this. An official announcement has yet to be made, but it would come as no surprise if Apple were to present new versions of its popular input devices soon – with USB-C as the standard. It is possible that the tech company could do this as part of the presentation of new Mac models. The latest devices, such as the recently leaked Apple MacBook Pro M4, are rumored to be presented in October.
