A curious packaging leak is causing a stir in the drone community: the upcoming DJI Mini 5 Pro could receive a significant camera upgrade compared to its predecessor. A 1-inch image sensor is to be used for the first time – a feature that was previously reserved for the larger Mavic models. In addition to improved video features and an extended gimbal system, the leak also hints at new safety functions. However, the mini-drone is not expected to be officially unveiled until September 2025.

  • 1-inch image sensor instead of 1/1.3 inch, 4K video with up to 120 fps
  • 225° gimbal rotation with vertical recording mode
  • 360° obstacle detection with LIDAR technology
  • Two battery options expected, some weighing over 249 grams

Powerful camera sensor for more detail and flexibility

According to the leaked packaging, DJI is using a 1-inch image sensor in the Mini 5 Pro for the first time in the Mini series. This larger sensor surface promises significantly improved image quality, especially in low light conditions. Together with the increased frame rate of 120 fps in 4K quality, users can not only take razor-sharp aerial shots, but also smooth slow-motion clips.

The gimbal design has apparently also been revised: It now supports a 225-degree rotation, which opens up more creative possibilities for camera pans. The option for vertical shots is particularly interesting – perfect for social media content in portrait format. The camera package is complemented by a telephoto mode with an effective focal length of 48 mm, presumably realized via a high-quality crop zoom. This combination of wide-angle and telephoto functionality should make the drone much more versatile for aerial photographers.

More safety thanks to new obstacle detection

DJI also appears to have improved the safety features. For the first time in a mini drone, full 360-degree obstacle detection is used, supported by forward-facing LIDAR sensors. This technology should help to detect and avoid potential collisions at an early stage – a clear step beyond the obstacle detection of the Mini 4 Pro.

This is complemented by the Active Track function, which is specially designed for dynamic scenarios such as tracking athletes. Whether running, cycling or skating – the drone can automatically keep the target in the frame and avoid obstacles on its own. In combination with the improved stabilization, this should ensure smooth and safe recordings.

Lightweight drone with potential weight problem

However, one detail that is missing from the leaked packaging is causing speculation: the weight specification. Industry observers suspect that the Mini 5 Pro could be just over the magic 249 gram limit due to the new technology and more powerful motors. DJI could therefore offer two battery variants – a lighter one for use in the sub-250 gram class and a more powerful one for longer flight times.

In any case, the drone should score points with a maximum flight time of 36 minutes, which represents a small but welcome gain compared to its predecessor. Buyers will once again have the choice between two Fly More combos: one version with the RC2 remote control and one with the RC-N3 controller.

Conclusion

The packaging leak for the DJI Mini 5 Pro indicates a massive camera upgrade and improved safety functions. With a 1-inch sensor, more flexible gimbal and 360-degree obstacle detection, the drone could significantly narrow the gap to the professional class – but will probably remain in the upper consumer segment in terms of price and ease of use. The official market launch is expected in September 2025. Prices and final specifications will not be confirmed until then, but the indications so far promise one thing: the Mini 5 Pro could become the most versatile mini drone that DJI has ever built.
