The drone and camera manufacturer DJI is entering the vacuum and mopping robot segment with the Romo – the official launch date is August 6, 2025 in China. Technology fans can look forward to a model with a base station, camera navigation and practical accessories.
The most important facts in brief
- Launch in August – teaser presented for China, global distribution still open
- Base station included – automatic emptying, cleaning and water refilling
- Camera instead of LiDAR – two front cameras replace the LiDAR tower
- Accessory package – side brushes and mop module already confirmed
DJI Romo: drone expert soon with vacuum robot
Previously known for drones and action cameras, DJI is venturing into a new market segment with the Romo. This expansion follows the increased interest in smart home technologies. The Romo is intended to score points with sophisticated camera navigation without the usually more expensive LiDAR tower – a bold step that potentially brings advantages in agility and design, but whether the mapping and obstacle detection remains just as precise remains to be seen. Visually, the first images of the robot are reminiscent of the Roborock Qrevo CurvX (€ 1,099.00 *).
Base station with all-round service
Surprisingly, LiDAR technology, which is now considered standard, is not used for navigation. The absence of LiDAR is compensated for by two front cameras, which results in a flatter profile and optimizes mobility. However, not using LiDAR could also lead to problems. Purely optical sensors are not very reliable, especially in poor lighting conditions.
DJI therefore promises efficient obstacle detection by visual means. As is usual with well-known manufacturers such as Roborock or Dreame, the docking station takes care of emptying, cleaning and water refilling – automatically and conveniently. An integrated mop module is apparently also planned.
Conclusion
DJI could have an exciting premiere up its sleeve with the DJI Romo. The camera navigation and the feature-rich base station could be technically impressive. If the robot also goes on sale in this country, the price is likely to be in the premium segment, comparable to high-end models costing around €1,000. Final details on price and availability outside China will be announced at the launch on August 6.
