Lego has unveiled a new highlight for retro and gaming fans at Comic-Con in San Diego: a detailed building block version of the legendary Nintendo Game Boy, which heralded the era of mobile gaming in 1989. After successful models of classic consoles such as the NES or the Atari 2600, Lego is closing the next iconic gap in its homage to gaming history with this set.

  • 421 components including two game modules (“Super Mario Land” & “Zelda: Link’s Awakening”)
  • Authentic design with interchangeable modules and printed display
  • Dimensions of the model: approx. 14 cm high, 9 cm wide and 3 cm deep
  • Price: 59.99 euros, available for pre-order with delivery from October 1, 2025

More than nostalgia: the Game Boy becomes a Lego masterpiece

The new set bears the set number 72046 and is clearly aimed at adult fans, as the 18+ age rating shows – not so much because of the level of difficulty, but because of the nostalgic value. With 421 individual parts, a Game Boy is recreated that comes surprisingly close to its role model: from the gray surface to the control pad to the colorless screen with interchangeable game scenes, everything is included. The images are displayed using transparent foil cards that are inserted behind the display – including motifs from Super Mario Land and The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening.

The integration of the interchangeable modules is particularly successful. As with the original, the game cartridges can be inserted and removed at the back. Lego supplies two mini-modules with matching stands, which can also be presented separately. Small details such as printable buttons, some of which can even be pressed, round off the experience and make the kit a successful mix of toy and exhibit.

A collector’s item with a wink

To present the new set, Lego also released a loving parody of the classic Game Boy commercial from the 90s. This not only builds a bridge between the generations, but also makes it clear what this model is all about: a tribute to the original, packaged in a modern building and collecting experience.

Measuring 14 × 9 × 3 cm, the model is handy enough for any display case, but detailed enough to be a real eye-catcher. The mixture of printed elements and stickers ensures a high degree of authenticity – and remains true to the look of the original.

Compared to previous sets such as the NES kit, the price of 59.99 euros is much more accessible, which also makes the model attractive to casual collectors. The limitation to three copies per order and the planned availability in independent retailers from October 2025 also indicate a broad demand – not least because the set is expected to appear in retail stores with the usual discounts.

Conclusion

With the new Game Boy building set, Lego delivers a lovingly designed collector’s item that combines a retro gaming feeling with creative building fun. The set not only comes with two cult games as modules, but also impresses with its smart details and high level of authenticity.

Available to pre-order now in the Lego online store for 59.99 euros – with planned delivery on October 1, 2025. Also available in retail stores.
