The manufacturer presented its gaming handheld to the public for the first time at RazerCon 2022. The Razer Edge is supposed to be nothing less than the ultimate Android gaming handheld, equipped with a Snapdragon G3x Gen 1 and a 144 Hz fast AMOLED display.

The Razer Edge in detail

The manufacturer has officially unveiled its own gaming handheld, the Razer Edge, after teasing it for weeks. It competes with the Logitech G Cloud gaming handheld and is primarily designed for game streaming. However, Android titles can also be downloaded and played via the Google Play Store.

This promises console-level operation, as the handheld uses the revamped Razer Kishi V2 Pro mobile controllers, including haptic Hypersense feedback, to complement the Kishi V2 from June 2022.

The latter rely on buttons with microswitches, analog triggers and programmable macros, while you can alternatively control with the touchscreen. This in turn is housed in a 6.8-inch 144 Hz AMOLED display that resolves in Full HD+ with 2,400 x 1,080 pixels.

The Razer Edge is deliberately a bit thicker than most smartphones because the manufacturer installs effective cooling. A 5-megapixel webcam in 1080p resolution also finds a place in the 260 mm x 85 mm x 11 mm large and 264 grams heavy (401 grams including the controllers) handheld.

Fast Qualcomm Snapdragon G3x Gen 1 Chip

Inside the Razer Edge is the Qualcomm Snapdragon G3x Gen 1 chip, which Qualcomm announced back in December 2021, but did not reveal any concrete specs. The Razer handheld is the first device worldwide to use the chip.

According to Razer, the actively cooled CPU should reach a clock rate of 3 GHz and is designed to render Android games smoothly with a high frame rate for a long time. It is supported by 8 GB of LPDDR5 working memory. Internally, it is backed up on the 128 GB UFS 3.1 storage, while microSD cards are supported up to a maximum of 2 terabytes.

The Razer Edge features stereo speakers and dual digital microphones with THX Spatial Audio support, while the battery holds 5,000 mAh.  Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, as well as a USB-C port and a 3.5 mm jack port are also included. A 5G model of the handheld will also follow later, which promises fast Internet on the go via eSIM.

Besides being able to download Android titles and play them offline, the handheld is also designed for cloud gaming or streaming and works with Xbox Cloud Gaming, Nvidia GeForce Now and Steam Link.

Prices and Availability

The Razer Edge gaming handheld has so far been announced exclusively for the US, where it is scheduled for release in January 2023. It will be offered as a Wi-Fi model including a Razer Kishi V2 Pro controller for an MSRP of $399.99

A Founders Edition at launch will cost $499.99 and includes the Razer Hammerhead True Wireless in-ear gaming headphones (2021). Razer does not yet mention prices for the 5G model. More details can be found on Razer’s product website.
