Portable gaming with a console feel

The ROG Xbox Ally series aims to take mobile gaming to the next level. In cooperation with Xbox, particular emphasis was placed on the integration of hardware and software so that gamers can use both classic console features and PC flexibility. At the heart of this is the Xbox user interface, which has been specially adapted for the devices and is based on Windows 11. All important functions can be called up directly via the Xbox button or the integrated Game Bar, ensuring a smooth gaming experience.

The ergonomic housing of the handhelds is based on the design of controllers and is intended to offer a high level of comfort even during long sessions. Textured surfaces and redesigned palm rests ensure a secure grip and more precise inputs. This takes the devices a step further than classic handheld consoles, which often focus exclusively on compactness.

Differences between the two models

Although both versions share an almost identical design and operating concept, they clearly differ in terms of features and performance.

  • ROG Xbox Ally: Equipped with the AMD Ryzen Z2 A processor, 16 GB LPDDR5X RAM and a 60 Wh battery, this model focuses primarily on efficiency and balanced performance. The device is suitable for anyone looking for a powerful handheld at an entry-level price without having to compromise on current game titles.
  • ROG Xbox Ally X: The premium version comes with the new AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24 GB RAM and an additional NPU for AI-supported performance optimization. Together with the larger 80 Wh battery, the device should enable both longer runtimes and higher frame rates. This positions the Ally X as a model for demanding users who prefer maximum performance.

Both handhelds also support modern image enhancement technologies such as AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR), Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) and AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF). In combination with the high-resolution displays, this creates a smooth gaming experience with stable frame rates – regardless of whether games from the Game Pass, on Steam or other platforms are running.

Futuristic design meets smart functions

In addition to the hardware, ROG focuses on the design and suitability for everyday use. The compact housing is shaped in such a way that it is not only functional, but also makes a visual statement. This ensures that the handhelds look modern both in the living room and on the move. Together with the extensive software features, the gaming experience is much more seamless than with classic Windows handhelds, which usually rely on a generic user interface.

The integration of the Xbox interface makes all the difference: games start more immediately, the use of additional gaming services is reduced and the Game Bar allows familiar Xbox functions to be used on the move. The series thus brings console operation and PC freedom to a handheld format that was previously dominated by niche manufacturers.

Conclusion

With the ROG Xbox Ally and the more powerful ROG Xbox Ally X, ASUS has joined forces with Xbox to expand the market for gaming handhelds with two exciting devices. Both models combine modern design, ergonomic handling and advanced hardware, but differ clearly in price and performance. The basic Ally model will be launched for 599 euros, while the Ally X version is available for 899 euros. Pre-orders are now open via the official ROG eShop and selected partner retailers.
