With the new SKILLER SGK50 S4 Gen2, Sharkoon is launching an update to its best-selling compact keyboard, which will be of particular interest to fans of hot-swappable gaming keyboards and DIY enthusiasts. The new generation combines a revised sound design with even more customization options – thanks to open source software, interchangeable switches and keycaps as well as a well thought-out design.

In a nutshell:

  • Supports QMK and VIA for full programmability
  • Hot-swappable for 3- and 5-pin switches (tool included)
  • Improved acoustics thanks to polycarbonate plate and double silicone damping
  • Available as standard, PBT or barebone version with RRP from €49.90

Powerful in a compact format

The SGK50 S4 Gen2 remains true to the compact 60 percent design and is therefore aimed at users with limited space or a penchant for minimalist setup design. Despite the smaller design, no function is lost: all common functions remain accessible thanks to the clever double assignment of important keys. Visually, the keyboard impresses with modern RGB lighting and a striking, detachable spiral cable in USB-C design, which is available in both black and white.

Gamers particularly benefit from the pre-installed Gateron Yellow Switches, which enable fast and precise inputs thanks to their linear characteristics and low friction. Those who prefer to install their own switches – whether because of the typing feel or the acoustics – can use almost all commercially available 3- and 5-pin switches. Sharkoon also supplies the necessary tools, making it easier to get started with modding.

Sound design meets personalization

A key feature of the SGK50 S4 Gen2 is the revised sound architecture: the built-in polycarbonate positioning plate in combination with double-layer silicone damping ensures a pleasantly muffled, rich sound without annoying rattling. This makes the keyboard attractive not only for gaming, but also for long typing sessions in the office or streaming area.

The integration of QMK and VIA takes the SGK50 S4 Gen2 to a new level: functions can now be completely reprogrammed using open source software. This means that even complex macros, layers or layout adjustments can be implemented quickly and without additional proprietary software. Users with individual requirements – such as workflows in software development, editing or multitasking setups – particularly benefit from this openness.

Sharkoon offers the Gen2 models in three variants:

  • Standard version with ABS keycaps and Gateron Yellow Switches
  • PBT version with high-quality, abrasion-resistant PBT keycaps
  • Barebone version without switches and keycaps – ideal for DIY fans

Conclusion

The SKILLER SGK50 S4 Gen2 combines a minimalist format with extensive modding options and the latest open source technology. With flexible hot-swap support, sophisticated sound design and a stylish spiral cable, it is not only functional, but also a real eye-catcher on the setup. The keyboard is available now – the standard version starts at 69.90 euros, the PBT version is 79.90 euros and the barebone version is available for 49.90 euros.
