Spotify announces another price increase for its ad-free premium service. From November 2025, individual subscriptions for current users in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America and the Asia-Pacific region will cost 12.99 euros per month – around nine percent more than before. New users pay the price begining August 14th. The adjustment will affect millions of users and comes less than two years after the last price increase.
- New price: 12.99 euros per month for Spotify Premium (individual subscription)
- Increase of around nine percent compared to the previous 10.99 euros
- Those affected will receive an e-mail announcement in the coming weeks
- Price adjustment also likely for Duo, Family and Student subscriptions
Background to the price increase
Spotify justifies the higher costs with the desire to continue offering an innovative product with a full range of functions and the best possible user experience. The company management points to the high costs for license fees, technical development and new functions. Interestingly, however, a frequently anticipated feature – Spotify HiFi with lossless audio quality – is still not offered, even though it was announced four years ago. A promise made in summer 2024 to release the HiFi mode “in the same year” has also remained unfulfilled to date.
The last price adjustment for Premium users in Europe took place on October 2, 2023, when the price climbed from €9.99 to €10.99 – also an increase of around ten percent. At that time, Spotify also increased the prices for all other subscription variants.
Possible effects on other subscription models
In the current announcement, Spotify only officially mentions the individual subscription. However, experience has shown that the prices for Premium Duo, Premium Family and Premium Student will also be increased. For example, Premium Duo rose from 12.99 euros to 14.99 euros and Family from 14.99 euros to 17.99 euros in October 2023. A comparable adjustment of around nine percent would make these tariffs noticeably more expensive once again.
The previous prices are still listed on the Spotify website. The changeover is expected to take place gradually, with existing customers being informed in advance by email. Users generally have the option of canceling their subscription before the new prices come into effect if they no longer wish to pay.
Classification and outlook
The new price increase is in line with an industry trend: Other music streaming services such as Apple Music or YouTube Music have also raised their prices in recent months. This is due to rising operating costs, higher remuneration for artists and the expansion of new features. For Spotify, the pricing strategy could pay off in the long term if the service continues to expand its range of functions – but the lack of the promised hi-fi offering is causing frustration for many.
Conclusion
From November 2025, Spotify Premium will cost 12.99 euros per month for individuals that already have a premium subscription, new users pay the price starting August 14th – an increase of nine percent. The surcharge may still be justifiable for frequent listeners, but occasional listeners in particular should consider whether the service is still worthwhile. Those who have been waiting for the promised HiFi option will have to be patient. Prices and availability for Duo, Family and Student subscriptions will probably be announced in the coming weeks.
