Tesla removed its two luxury models Model S and Model X from the official web configurator in Germany at the end of July 2025. Only demonstration vehicles (Model X) and certified pre-owned vehicles are still available to existing customers. This means that the manufacturer will focus exclusively on the Model 3 and Model Y models in Germany in future.

The most important facts in brief

  • Model S and X can no longer be reconfigured in Germany since July 2025
  • Only existing and used vehicles still available
  • In the first half of 2025: only 58 new Model S and 59 Model X registrations in Germany compared to over 6,300 Model Ys
  • Facelift versions of the models are available in the USA, but not yet planned in Europe

Why is Tesla withdrawing?

Tesla has apparently recognized that demand for the Model S and Model X in Europe is extremely low. In Germany, only 58 Model S and 59 Model X were newly registered in the first half of 2025 – not even ten per month per model – while the Model Y alone achieved over 6,300 registrations. Tesla is therefore drawing the line: keeping a new Model S or X configurable is obviously no longer economically viable. Both models have also been removed from the configurator in other core European markets such as Norway, the UK, France and the Netherlands.

What is behind the Tesla US facelift?

In June 2025, Tesla presented a subtle facelift for the Model S and Model X in the USA. The changes are limited to cosmetic and comfort upgrades:

  • Two new paint colors (Frost Blue Metallic, Diamond Black)
  • New wheel designs, darkened Tesla logo
  • Improved noise insulation and active noise suppression
  • Animated ambient lighting and modified diffuser on the Model S Plaid

Nothing has changed under the hood: The battery and powertrain remain technically unchanged, range according to the US EPA remains at around 660 km (410 miles), but prices have been increased by around 5,000 US dollars. It is unclear whether these facelift variants will ever be offered in Europe.

Outlook

It remains to be seen whether Tesla’s decision is a long-term one or merely an adjustment phase before the facelift models are rolled out in Europe. Industry observers see a possible sign of a strategic realignment: in future, the focus will be on more efficient, mass-market series such as the Model Y.

Conclusion

Tesla has effectively shut down the Model S and Model X on the German market: Since July 2025, both can no longer be reconfigured, but are only available as existing vehicles. With extremely low sales figures and a moderate facelift range in the USA, the company seems to be clearly focusing on the high-volume Model 3 and Y models. Whether and when the slightly refreshed versions of the luxury class will come to Europe remains to be seen.
