EZVIZ CP7 Test

Anyone who wants to make their own four walls a little smarter these days will sooner or later be interested in a video doorbell. Most models rely on a combination of a smart doorbell unit integrated into the network and an app on the smartphone. In a way, the cell phone acts as a mobile surveillance screen. In the EZVIZ CP7 test, we looked at a model that goes one step further. Here, the app is optional. In addition to the stylishly designed doorbell, you also get a matching display that makes it easy to control from home. And that’s not all. The EZVIZ can also be used as a practical door opener. We took a look at the whole thing in practice.

EZVIZ CP7 test: Doorbell with modern design

Does the EZVIZ CP7 look familiar to you? Yes, there’s no denying that the smart doorbell system looks very similar to the EZVIZ HP7 (Review | € 241.54 *). Is that a bad thing? Not at all! True to the motto “never change a running system”, you also get a well-made piece of smart home technology here.

EZVIZ CP7 Test

The system is made up of a total of two core elements. You install the doorbell in the outdoor area. This is not only significantly larger, but also much more angular than the EZVIZ models EZVIZ DB2 (Review | € 189.60 *) and EZVIZ DB1C (Review | € 77.99 *).

Everyone has to decide for themselves what they like better. Personally, I find the design of the CP7 much more grown-up than that of its round counterparts. However, in view of its size and conspicuousness, you can tell that the CP7 is not primarily intended to be placed at the front door. Strictly speaking, that would not be in keeping with its intended use.

EZVIZ CP7 Test

After all, the CP7 is not just a doorbell, but also a door opener. More on this later. The front of the doorbell unit is quite inconspicuous and is primarily based on a glazed black body. The camera, EZVIZ logo and the scanner for RFID chips are located under the glass cover. In contrast to this, we find a rectangular bell button in the lower area, the look of which is reminiscent of brushed aluminum.

The bell sign is also illuminated so that visitors can quickly spot it. The bracket into which you insert the doorbell also has a small canopy. This should not only further improve weather protection, but also ensure camera shots without annoying raindrops.

EZVIZ CP7 test: Separate display for indoor use

As already mentioned, the EZVIZ CP7 doorbell system offers an additional display, unlike pretty much all other smart video doorbells. This means that you can operate and monitor your doorbell via the smartphone app as well as via the 7-inch touchscreen.

Like the doorbell, the matching screen also impresses with its excellent workmanship. As the screen has pleasingly thin edges, it can also be installed inconspicuously in the hallway.

EZVIZ CP7 test: Installation

The EZVIZ CP7 is based on a two-part system. While you attach the 2K video doorbell to your house wall or entrance gate, the corresponding display is located on an interior wall. Neither the doorbell nor the display have an integrated battery. This means that the installation effort is certainly greater than with many other smart video doorbells. If you are not confident about this, you should consult an expert beforehand.

If you don’t want to incur the additional costs for an electrician, I think it’s essential to at least get help from a friend who is reasonably handy. This is especially true if you want to connect the CP7 to existing bell wires. This is basically possible, but requires a lot of skill. But even if you want to exploit the full potential of the system, you should consult an expert.

The CP7 can also be used to open your entrance gate by remote control. Unfortunately, we were unable to simulate this in our test due to the lack of such gate technology. However, if you want to plan the whole thing in your home, you can find detailed information on this topic on the official website. The cabling of the system may mean that the installation effort is quite high, but the CP7 also offers you a great deal of stability.

The fact that the doorbell and monitor are wired means that the system works even if there is an internal failure. It only stops working if there is a power failure. And this is also the case with conventional doorbells. The connection to the Internet is nevertheless an advantage. Finally, a link to the EZVIZ app can be established, which enables monitoring and control while on the move.

The installation itself is explained step by step thanks to the well-illustrated instructions. However, the installation of the system should be self-explanatory for professionals and handymen anyway. Once both the doorbell and screen are installed, you can test the EZVIZ CP7 for the first time. And here the system impresses with a really great picture quality the first time it is switched on.

EZVIZ CP7 test: 2K cam with person recognition

On board the smart video doorbell is a camera that not only sends impressively sharp images to the external screen, but also to your smartphone thanks to its 2K resolution. The camera also impresses with a pleasingly wide viewing angle of 162 degrees. This means you will hardly miss anything outside your front door. Thanks to comprehensive motion detection, the camera also ensures a high level of security. After all, motion is not just motion.

Instead, it detects people and sends a corresponding notification to your smartphone or screen. If you find this too tiring in the long run because your doorbell is forced to register a lot of human movement every day due to its positioning, you can switch the whole thing off if you wish. This is where the clear and smooth-running app from EZVIZ comes into play, which is available for Android OS and iOS.

You can also capture the image of the doorbell on your smartphone

When it gets dark outside, the EZVIZ still gives you a clear view. This is made possible by night vision. The manufacturer relies on classic IR night vision with a range of 5 meters. A pity really. After all, it is now almost standard even for significantly cheaper models to have color night vision on board. The best example is the TP-Link Tapo D230S1 (Review | € 84.90 *).

EZVIZ CP7 Test: EZVIZ App

Anyone who has ever used an EZVIZ gadget will have already enjoyed the company’s own app. And it works really well. This is partly due to the clear design and partly due to the lightning-fast performance. The only thing to complain about is the visual design. It doesn’t exactly look up to date at times.

You can then make various settings in the app itself. Your first path should lead you to the settings for the camera’s field of view. Given the wide viewing angle, it is possible that areas of public road traffic or even neighboring properties may be recorded. It’s better to play it safe than sorry and define “blind” areas of the camera.

This ensures operation in accordance with applicable data protection laws. You should also adjust the motion detection according to your wishes. If you are annoyed by too many notifications due to registered movements, you can not only turn down the sensitivity of the motion detection. Motion detection can also be deactivated completely if required.

EZVIZ CP7 test: Remote-controlled door unlocking

If you like, the EZVIZ CP7 is a real manager for your entrance area. After all, you don’t just get a video doorbell here. The system also serves as a door opener for electronic gates. And that can mean a lot of convenience in many situations. Just imagine that you are in the shower at home and the door opener is not available for you. Now the parcel service rings the doorbell and asks to be let in.

You will find the entrances on the back of the doorbell

Instead of running to the door dripping wet in your Adam or Eve costume, you can have the door opened conveniently via the EZVIZ app. The whole thing works even if you’re not at home – the connection to the World Wide Web allows you to open the door while you’re on the move. You can also use an intercom system via the app and communicate with the person in front of the doorbell using two-way audio. Alternatively, all this is also possible via the separate screen.

You can unlock connected locks using an RFID card, among other things

In the smart doorbell market, the EZVIZ CP7 is a truly unique selling point. But the CP7 can also make things much easier for visitors and your personal access to the house. After all, you can easily open entrance gates using an RFID chip. EZVIZ includes three of these in the scope of delivery. Simply hold the chip up to the scanner on the video doorbell and the gates will open for you. Alternatively, you can of course also simply use the app.

EZVIZ CP7 test: Local storage space

It would be unwise not to use a video doorbell as a practical surveillance camera. Accordingly, you can also conveniently save the recordings from the CP7 so that you can access them again at a later time. Here you have the choice between the cloud solution from EZVIZ or you can make use of the local storage space.

You can place a MicroSD card with a maximum of 512 GB in the system. Of course, the EZVIZ cloud service is not free. You will have to budget for monthly costs of at least €9.99. The AES-128 encryption promises the best possible protection for your video recordings.

Conclusion

With the EZVIZ CP7, the manufacturer delivers a well thought-out complete package for anyone who wants more security and convenience at the front door – and doesn’t want to rely exclusively on their smartphone. The additional 7-inch display for indoor use in particular makes the system stand out from the crowd and enables simple operation even without an app. The elegant design, the powerful 2K camera with person detection and the option of remote-controlled door opening including RFID access make the CP7 a real all-rounder in the entrance area.

ezviz cp7 test

Although the wired installation requires some manual skill (or an electrician), the CP7 scores with a particularly stable and fail-safe connection – even in the event of internet failures. Deductions are only made for the lack of color night vision and the somewhat dated look of the otherwise very reliable EZVIZ app. All in all, the EZVIZ CP7 is a worthwhile investment for anyone who wants more than just a simple video doorbell – namely a versatile and high-quality door management system.
